Houses and apartments have always been high priced as an investment for Myanmar people because of the lack of alternative local investment opportunities and the difficulty in the past of investing overseas.
From 2011 to 2106 the big influx of foreigners and retuning Myanmar people and the shortage of international standard accommodation meant that prices were very high compared to Asian neighbours. The situation has eased in 2015 and 2016 with prices lower than before but still high by Asian standards.
Since 2016 a large number of office, retail and residential property has been completed and some condominiums are now renting for half what they were in the peak period.
In most ASEAN cities there are now large numbers of serviced apartments which are available on one month deposit and one to three months in advance basis. Serviced apartments provide a compromise between a hotel and an apartment / house. Serviced apartments are the ideal way to expatriates to ease into living in a new city. Since 2017 the number of high end serviced apartments available in Yangon has increased significantly. For instance the Lotte that opened in 2018.
